Ethical issues in participatory arts methods for young people with adverse childhood experiences.Gabriella Pavarini, Lindsay Smith, Nicola Shaughnessy, Anna Mankee-Williams, Josita Kavitha Thirumalai, Natalie Russell & Kamaldeep Bhui - unknown
Context: Participatory arts-based methods such as photovoice, drama and music have increasingly been used to engage young people who are exposed to psychosocial risks. These methods have the potential to empower youth and provide them with an accessible and welcoming environment to express and manage difficult feelings and experiences. These effects are, however, dependent on the way these methods are implemented and how potential ethical concerns are handled. Objective: Using the current literature on arts-based health research as a foundation, this (...)

    Body Parts and Early‐Learned Verbs.Josita Maouene, Shohei Hidaka & Linda B. Smith - 2008 - Cognitive Science 32 (7):1200-1216.
This article reports the structure of associations among 101 common verbs and body parts. The verbs are those typically learned by children learning English prior to 3 years of age. In a free association task, 50 adults were asked to provide the single body part that came to mind when they thought of each verb. Analyses reveal highly systematic and structured patterns of associations that are also related to the normative age of acquisition of the verbs showing a progression from (...)

The associative system of early-learned Hebrew verbs and body parts: a comparative study with American English.Josita Maouene, Nitya Sethuraman, Sigal Uziel-Karl & Shohei Hidaka - 2023 - Cognitive Linguistics 34 (1):1-34.
This paper compares the associative system of early-learned verbs and body parts in Hebrew with previously published data on American English (Maouene, Josita, Shohei Hidaka & Linda B. Smith. 2008. Body parts and early-learned verbs. Cognitive Science 32(7). 1200–1216). Following the methodology of the former study, 51 Hebrew-speaking college students gave the first body part that came to mind for each of 103 early-learned Hebrew verbs, 81 of which were translational equivalents. Rate of convergence and divergence and underlying patterns (...)

    Designing a Mobile-Messaging App-Based Teachers’ Community of Practice in India.Padma M. Sarangapani & Bindu R. Thirumalai - 2023 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 43 (1-2):32-41.
A mobile-based messaging app (MMA) was implemented as a teachers’ community of practice in the Indian context through a large-scale educational initiative. The development process adopted a Design-based Research approach to test underlying theories in real-world settings. The researchers theorised the pedagogical affordances of the MMA Telegram using Davis and Chouinard's theoretical framework of affordances, defined as a relational process among users, designers, the environment, and the artefact. This paper discusses the iterative design process in detail. The findings showed that (...)

A Comparison of Non-verbal Maternal Care of Male and Female Infants in India and the United Kingdom: The Parent-Infant Caregiving Touch Scale in Two Cultures.John Hodsoll, Andrew Pickles, Laura Bozicevic, Thirumalai Ananthanpillai Supraja, Jonathan Hill, Prabha S. Chandra & Helen Sharp - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Differences in infant caregiving behavior between cultures have long been noted, although the quantified comparison of touch-based caregiving using uniform standardized methodology has been much more limited. The Parent-Infant Caregiving Touch scale was developed for this purpose and programming effects of early parental tactile stimulation on infant hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal -axis functioning, cardiovascular regulation and behavioral outcomes, similar to that reported in animals, have now been demonstrated. In order to inform future studies examining such programming effects in India, we first aimed (...)
